Australian batter David Warner was one of the three culprits of the 2018 ball-tampering saga. He along with Steve Smith were handed year-long bans from competitive cricket while Warner was sentenced with a captaincy ban.

Warner wants to have an ‘honest conversation’ with CA

The opening batsman has expressed his desire to discuss about his leadership future with Cricket Australia. Quite recently, the 35-year-old signed a deal with Sydney Thunder for the next two Big Bash League (BBL) seasons.

This year’s BBL event will mark Warner’s return to the tournament after a gap of nine years. He last featured in BBL during the 2013-14 season, while playing for the Sydney Sixers.

While the punishment he coped in 2018 prevented him from holding any leadership position in Australian cricket, several experts within the fraternity think that the board’s decision needs to be overturned.

What Warner had to say

“That hasn't really been brought to the table. As I've said plenty of times off the record, it's upon the board to reach out to me and open their doors. Then I can sit down and have an honest conversation with them. The board has changed since back in 2018 and when all those sanctions were dealt. It would be great to have a conversation with them and see where we are at.”

His Test captain and long-time teammate Pat Cummins has also been an advocate for overturning the ban. At the recent Chappell Foundation dinner at the SCG, the mercurial speedster said:

“I don't see why not. He's a brilliant leader. I hope so”.

Meanwhile, the Sydney Thunder stated that their stance over Warner’s club captaincy will be revealed closer to the start of the season.
