After 17 years of waiting for the IPL trophy, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru lifted their first IPL trophy last month. However, the celebrations were short-lived as a tragic stampede at the Chinnaswamy Stadium cast a dark shadow over their historic victory, and the woes have now deepened.
As per reports, the Karnataka Government is set to take legal action against the franchise, KSCA, and DNA Entertainment Networks for the heartbreaking incident.
RCB To Sink Into Deeper Trouble
After having a stellar season this year, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru lifted their maiden IPL trophy, and the entire country celebrated the massive victory. But the triumph quickly turned tragic. Just a day after their return to the city, a horrific stampede at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium claimed 11 lives and left over 50 injured. After that, the franchise found itself in legal trouble.
RCB’s troubles have increased as the Siddaramaiah-led cabinet plans to take legal action after John Michael D’Cunha’s report. This report points to RCB, KSCA, and DNA Entertainment Networks for the tragic stampede. It also names KSCA president Raghuram Bhat, former secretary A Shankar, RCB vice-president Rajesh Menon, and senior DNA officials as responsible.
As quoted by The Times Of India, Karnataka’s law and parliamentary affairs minister, HK Patil, said that, “Action against (suspended) government officials depends on the outcome of the departmental inquiry.”
Following that, the DNA Entertainment Networks have challenged the report and filed a petition at the Karnataka High Court. Citing procedural flaws and alleged bias, they’ve urged the court to scrap the commission’s findings entirely.
The court took notice of the stampede deaths and the state report on its own, which led to the formation of a commission of inquiry. In the meantime, the CID and an investigation led by Bengaluru Urban’s deputy commissioner are still in progress.
