In a significant development around Afghanistan cricket, there are reports that Taliban is looking to ban all forms of cricket in Afghanistan. According to a report from Wion,  the Supreme Leader of Afghanistan - Hibatullah Akhundzada has announced a gradual ban on cricket. However, there is no official confirmation regarding this information.

It is a major setback for Afghanistan cricket as Women cricket is already banned in Afghanistan and it looks like the men's cricket is likely to go down the same route. In 2021, Taliban banned female sports in the country which caused an uproar around the globe and as a result, Australia have cancelled their bilateral series against Afghanistan men.

The report mentioned that Akhunzada is not happy with the sport as he believes it has harmful effects. It added that playing cricket is against the Sharia Law. This situation has led to a tussle between two factions in Afghanistan- one led by Akhunzada, and the other by Sirajuddin Haqqani, the brother of Anas Haqqani, who invested heavily in Afghanistan cricket.

Afghanistan Cricket Enjoying A Golden Run

Meanwhile, they only enhanced their performance in the T20 World Cup where they beat the likes of Australia and entered the semi-finals of the tournament for the first time in their history.

The Afghanistan team recently hosted New Zealand at Greater Noida, India, where they were supposed to play a first-ever Test match against New Zealand. However, on Friday, September 13. The match got abandoned without a ball being bowled on any of the five days.
