In the sixth game of the World Cup 2023, the Kiwis faced the Netherlands at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad. Roelof van der Merwe, who has played three times in the ICC events against New Zealand, has helped his team take their first wicket again.

The Black Caps were going solid initially but the Dutch left-arm orthodox spinner came to bowl as the fourth change and took the first wicket for his team by dismissing Devon Conway, who scored an unbeaten century in the last game.

Three in Three record against the Kiwis for Roelof van der Merwe

The 38-year-old, Dutch spinner, Roelof van der Merwe scripted history as he picked the first wicket of the New Zealand team on Monday. The Dutch spinner has featured thrice in the ICC tournaments against New Zealand and has drawn the first blood for his team on all three occasions.

While playing in the 2009 T20 World Cup, when Merwe used to play for South Africa, he took the catch of Martin Guptill and helped the Proteas strike their first blow in the game. On the second occasion in the 2009 Champions Trophy, he again helped the South African team get their first breakthrough as he took the catch of the Kiwi opener Jesse Ryder. Merwe then started playing for the Dutch, in Hyderabad, he helped the Dutch strike the first blow taking the wicket of Devon Conway.

This is how he was involved in all three occasions whether as a catcher or a bowler, he has helped in picking up the wickets of the Kiwi openers.

Unfortunately, the Dutch have lost their second game and will now play against the Proteas on the 17th of October.
