Cricket's big Olympics dream is about to come true as the Los Angeles Olympics 2028 organising committee has approved cricket for the games alongside Flag Football, Baseball and Softball. The news will officially be confirmed within the next few hours by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which previously was keen to include cricket due to its mass appeal.

This verdict, which is a result of intense discussions between LA28 and IOC during the previously concluded meeting between the two parties, will next set out to finalise the matter in IOC's 141st session in Mumbai, which will happen on 15th & 16th October. But before that, IOC's executive board meeting will be conducted on the 14th & 15th of October.

Furthermore, a decision could be taken on Lacrosse and even Squash, which could be included as additional sports.

Previously, cricket was not included in the list of the original 28 sports that will be part of the extravaganza in 2028. However, ICC's effort to make cricket an Olympic sport received a shot in the arm when it was shortlisted among eight other sports set for review by the IOC.

Also, it was recommended by the ICC that the tournament shall consist of six teams, with both Men's and Women's teams taking part in the T20 format. The cut-off date for the selection of the six teams is still not decided but will be given later, considering the tournament structure decision is pending, too.

To the unversed, men and women Indian cricket teams made their entry into the recently concluded Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, where both sides earned Gold for the country. The Commonwealth Games 2022 that were held in Birmingham last year saw Women's competition being played, with Australia clinching Gold after defeating India in the finals.

Therefore, if cricket returns at the Summer Olympics, it would be played 128 years apart, as the first and last time it happened was in the 1900 Paris Olympics.
