Retired India star cricketer R Ashwin has announced that he is retiring from the Indian Premier League (IPL). The 37-year-old spinner shared the news on social media on Wednesday, August 27. Over his IPL career, Ashwin played 221 matches and took 187 wickets, making him one of the most successful bowlers in the tournament’s history.

R Ashwin May Play In The Hundred

But his retirement from the IPL doesn’t mean he’s done with cricket altogether. Telegraph Reports suggest that Ashwin is looking forward to playing in The Hundred, a popular cricket league in England.

It is important to mention that Ashwin’s decision to quit the IPL surprised many, especially since there were rumours he could be traded to Chennai Super Kings. (CSK). However, his retirement now clears the way for him to join overseas leagues, something Indian players usually cannot do while still active in Indian cricket.

Notably, BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) only allows male players to play abroad after they officially retire from Indian tournaments.

Throughout his IPL journey, R Ashwin played for five different teams, Chennai Super Kings, Rising Pune Supergiants (RPS), Punjab Kings (PBKS), Delhi Capitals (DC), and Rajasthan Royals (RR). The 38-year-old spinner even captained Punjab during his stint. He leaves the league as the fifth-highest wicket-taker in IPL history and also contributed with the bat, scoring 833 runs, including a half-century.

If Ashwin joins The Hundred, he will be entering at an exciting time. The tournament is set to get bigger next year, with several IPL owners investing in teams, some franchises being rebranded, and player salaries expected to rise. This could make the league even more attractive for international stars like Ashwin.
