In a significant development, Punjab Kings (PBKS) have signed Australian opener Mitchell Owen as the injury replacement for Glenn Maxwell for the ongoing IPL 2025 season. The Indian Premier League confirmed the signing through an official update on its X handle.
Mitchell Owen Joins PBKS As Maxwell's Replacement
Mitchell Owen became a household name during the Big Bash League, as he powered Hobart Hurricanes to the title with a magnificent knock in the final. He went unsold in last year's mega auction, but got a chance to represent Peshawar Zalmi in the Pakistan Super League.
The swashbuckling opener joins Punjab Kings for INR 3 Crores as the replacement of Maxwell, who earlier got ruled out due to a broken finger. In 30 T20 innings, Mitchell Owen has struck 646 runs, including two hundreds, at an average of 25.84 and a strike rate of 184.57.
He has also bagged ten wickets with his gentle medium pace bowling in the shortest format. Maxwell's injury shouldn't be considered as a massive blow to Punjab Kings, given he was struggling with his form in the IPL 2025. In six IPL innings, the veteran all-rounder could score only 48 runs, averaging eight and striking at a horrible rate of 97.96.
Mitchell Owen's Performance In PSL 2025
Before being picked by the Kings, Mitchell Owen was an integral part of Peshawar Zalmi in the PSL 2025. The explosive right-handed batter struck 101 runs in six innings at a superb strike rate of 198.04.
Although he couldn't register an exceptional average with the bat, it could be attributed to the Zalmi's decision to use him primarily as a lower middle order batter in the competition. Having said that, it will be interesting to see where the Kings fit him in their line-up, considering the prolific performance of their top-order comprising Priyansh Arya, Shreyas Iyer and Prabhsimran Singh.
