In the pressure of IPL, careers can be made or broken in a matter of deliveries. For Yash Dayal, the left-arm pacer from Uttar Pradesh, the turning point came not just on the field, but in the quiet conversations held behind closed doors with Virat Kohli.
It’s not the first time Kohli has supported young players. Throughout his career, the former Indian skipper has been a beacon of motivation, transforming not just the fitness culture of Indian cricket, but also creating an environment where players are encouraged to grow through their mistakes.
Virat Kohli’s Endless Support To Yash Dayal
Yash Dayal was brutally thrust into the spotlight after being hit for five consecutive sixes by Rinku Singh during IPL 2023 while playing for Gujarat Titans. However, his fortunes began to change when he was picked by RCB ahead of the 2024 season.
Behind his quiet resurgence was Virat Kohli's endless support. Speaking to the Times of India, Yash Dayal’s father, Chanderpal, revealed how Kohli’s support played a crucial role in helping the young pacer find his rhythm again.
"Virat Kohli has supported him a lot. When Yash joined RCB, Virat would often call him to his room — and sometimes, he would go to Yash’s room himself. They discussed that over [from 2024], and Virat told him one thing: ‘Keep working hard, toofan macha de. Main hoon tere saath. Chinta mat karna. Mehnat karna mat chhodna. Galtiyan karna, par seekhna aur aage badhna (Stir up a storm. I am with you. Don’t worry. Never stop working hard. Make mistakes, but learn from them and keep moving forward).' Virat has given him a lot of freedom and turned him into a fearless cricketer," Chanderpal Dayal told Times of India.
Yash Dayal's Remarkable Redemption
Yash Dayal was one of RCB’s three retained players ahead of IPL 2025. Since then he has transformed into a calm, composed death-over specialist. It is important to note that his defining moment came during a high-stakes clash against CSK last season.
In a do-or-die scenario, Dayal successfully defended 17 runs in the final over against the legendary MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja, helping RCB clinch a crucial win and secure a playoff spot.
Remarkably, a similar situation unfolded this season. Once again up against CSK, and with 15 runs to defend in the last over, Dayal rose to the challenge. He dismissed Dhoni in the middle of the over and shut down the chase, sealing yet another nail-biting win for RCB on May 3.
