PSL to collide with IPL 2026 (Source:@pathikghugare,x.com)
The Pakistan Super League (PSL) is once again heading toward a scheduling face-off with the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2026. With the ICC T20 World Cup locked in for the February-March window in India and Sri Lanka, the PCB is considering to shift PSL 11 to the April-May period according to reports as quoted by NDTV Sports.
It is important to mention that this scenario is not new. The 2025 edition of the PSL also overlapped with the IPL after the Champions Trophy forced a similar scheduling shuffle.
However, it was expected that as PSL is colliding with IPL its viewership might drop this year. However, the viewership reportedly remained stable, even improving on certain platforms. But behind the numbers lies a deeper concern about foreign players prioritising IPL contracts, and PSL being seen as a backup option.
IPL vs PSL: No Room Left In Traditional Window
Historically held between February and March, the PSL is struggling to reclaim its preferred time slot. The ICC T20 World Cup 2026 has made that period unavailable yet again. Meanwhile, alternative windows like December-January are already congested.
A PCB source confirmed that there are (as quoted by NDTV Sports) ongoing discussions going on with franchise owners about shifting PSL 11 to April-May, as was the case this year:
"There’s a window available in December-January, but we’ve already allocated players and planned domestic commitments. We are left with April-May as the only feasible option," said the source.
Franchises Raise Red Flags
According to the same report, most franchise owners have committed to continuing their ownership for the next 10 years, Multan Sultans owner Ali Tareen has demanded a review of the financial model. Tareen has expressed concerns over consistent losses due to unstable scheduling and competition with the IPL.
The April-May clash with IPL is commercially risky. The IPL boasts a bigger global reach and star-studded lineups. Many top-tier foreign players snubbed PSL 2025 in favour of Indian franchise league deals. While some notable names not picked in the IPL auction did appear in PSL squads.
The PSL is at a critical point for next year as well, unless the board finds a new, window or secures stronger player commitments and sponsor confidence, the league could continue to collide with IPL.
