Sourav Ganguly is once again at the helm of Bengal cricket. The former India captain has returned as president of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), a role he previously held from 2015 to 2019.
Ganguly filed his official nomination for the president's post on September 14. With no other nominations for the post, the ex-captain will be elected unopposed.
Sourav Ganguly To Take Over Charge From Brother Snehasish
On Tuesday, September 16, CAB confirmed that Sourav Ganguly will succeed his elder brother Snehasish Ganguly as president with immediate effect. Snehasish, interestingly, has been at the helm since 2019.
While the CAB elections are scheduled for September 22 during the association’s AGM, the result is already clear that Ganguly is back in charge.
Speaking to the media after the confirmation, he thanked members for their support and promised to work together with his team for the progress of Bengal cricket.
"I would like to thank everyone for their support. At CAB, there is no opposition, everyone is a part of this Association. We will all work together to take CAB & Bengal cricket ahead. There are important events coming up at - Eden Gardens - India's Test match against South Africa, T20 World Cup, Bengal Pro T20 League. I will try and do my best," Ganguly said.
The coming months are packed with big events at Eden Gardens, including a Test match against South Africa, fixtures during the T20 World Cup, and the Bengal Pro T20 League. Sourav Ganguly promised to give his best in ensuring the smooth and successful hosting of these tournaments.
Alongside him, the unopposed panel includes Nitish Ranjan Dutta (vice-president), Bablu Koley (secretary), Madan Mohan Ghosh (joint secretary), and Sanjay Das (treasurer).
Ganguly Mum On Rumours Around BCCI Return
Meanwhile, speculation continues around Sourav Ganguly’s possible return as BCCI president. He previously held the top job between 2019 and 2022 before being succeeded by Roger Binny.
With the BCCI elections scheduled for September 28 and Ganguly nominated by CAB as its AGM representative, his name is still being linked to the post. However, Sourav Ganguly brushed off the talk, saying, “Don’t assume anything.”
