Kiran More on the verge of taking over as BCCI President [Source: @mipaltan/x.com]
Looks like the winds of change are blowing through Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCC) and leading the charge is none other than former Indian wicketkeeper-batter Kiran More. Word from the grapevine is that he has emerged as the frontrunner to take over the BCCI presidency.
Kiran More Poised To Take Guard As Next BCCI President
With Roger Binny stepping down after hitting the 70-year age limit on July 19, the chair has been sitting vacant. In the meantime, Rajeev Shukla has been holding fort as the vice-president.
Sources have spilled the beans; the BCCI top brass reached out to a few ex-cricketers from the West Zone, including one from Saurashtra. But when the dust settled, everyone seemed to have their money on More.
Most of the state associations are reportedly on the same page. Instead of going through the long-drawn formal election which was initially planned for September 28, there is chatter of going the unanimous route. If all goes well, More could walk in unopposed.
More’s Rich Cricketing Pedigree
Born in 1962, Kiran More had his gloves on for India from 1984 to 1993, featuring in 49 Tests and 94 ODIs. He was part of India’s Asia Cup-winning squads in 1988 and 1991.
After hanging up his boots, he didn’t just fade into the background. He served as the Chairman of Selectors at BCCI and even worked as a wicketkeeping consultant for Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League.
In 2019, he took charge as Director of Cricket and interim coach of USA Cricket, playing a massive role in reshaping their structure post-ODI status. Currently, he is steering the Cricket Advisory Committee of the Baroda Cricket Association.
Why This Move Could Be A Game-Changer
If More walks into the BCCI president’s office, it will mark a rare return of a former cricketer to the top seat. And that is exactly what Indian cricket might need right now, someone who has been in the thick of things, someone who knows the heat of the battle and the weight of the gloves.
With India set to host several marquee ICC events, including the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, having a cricketing brain like More’s at the helm could be a masterstroke. The board seems ready to back experience over politics and that could be a turning point.
