Brief Scores: New Zealand: 194-8 (20 overs) [Finn Allen: 74 (41), Kane Williamson: 26 (15); Haris Rauf 3/38 (4), Abbas Afridi 2/43 (4)] defeated Pakistan: 173 all out (19.3 overs) [Babar Azam: 66 (43), Fakhar Zaman: 50 (25); Adam Milne 2/21 (4), Ben Sears 2/28 (4)] by 21 runs.

New Zealand crashed Pakistan’s spirited fightback in the run-chase to secure a 21-run win in the second T20I at Hamilton and went 2-0 up in their five-match home series.

Allen bashes 74 before Rauf derails death-overs assault

New Zealand opener Finn Allen blazed his way to a full-blooded powerplay start after the hosts were put into bat by Pakistan for the second time in succession in this series. His partner Devon Conway managed a 15-ball 20 at the top, before his dismissal at the hands of Aamer Jamal opened up the pathway for captain Kane Williamson into the crease.

Williamson listed three boundaries and a six in his entertaining 15-ball 26-run cameo before he retired himself out owing to a hamstring scare at the halfway stage of the innings. Allen went ahead and blasted his fourth T20I half-century and ended up tallying a scintillating 74 from just 41 balls.

Abbas Afridi snapped two wickets in succession in the middle overs, including that of dangerman Daryl Mitchell; while Haris Rauf’s triple strike in the penultimate over of the innings kept New Zealand’s run-scoring in check at the death. The ‘Black Caps’, having raced to 111-1 from the first 10 overs, eventually ended up conjuring 194-8 by the end of their innings.

Babar Azam, Fakhar Zaman list fighting 50s in defeat

Pakistan number three Babar Azam and dazzling middle-order star Fakhar Zaman clubbed sparkling half-centuries from their ends after the ‘Men in Green’ lost both their openers within the first two overs of their monumental run-chase task.

Babar top-scored in the innings with 66 from just 43 balls, thus listing his second half-century in the process. Fakhar, on the other hand, soared with five sixes and three boundaries in his entertaining 25-ball 50 before he was cleaned up by Adam Milne.

Fakhar’s untimely dismissal at 97-2 led to a match-defining middle-order collapse for Pakistan, as they soon slipped to 125-6 by 14.3 overs. Young fast bowler Ben Sears and senior spinner Ish Sodhi cut through Pakistan’s famed batting line-up in the middle overs, while Tim Southee grabbed the first and last wickets on offer to fold up the visitors for just 173.

Milne, who picked up the key wickets of Mohammad Rizwan and Fakhar Zaman, also demolished the tail to finish with astonishing figures of 4-33, as New Zealand went 2-0 up in the five-match series with their comfortable 21-run win.
