Afghanistan has withdrawn from the tri-series in Pakistan, scheduled to start from November 17. The tri-series also includes Sri Lanka, and now the Pakistan cricket board is on the lookout for a new team.
The withdrawal from Afghanistan was due to the attack from Pakistan on their country and the death of three budding cricketers. There were initially concerns over the future of the tri-series, but now PCB has confirmed that the tri-series will be played on the scheduled date, with a new team replacing Afghanistan.
The report from Sohail Imran, the Sports Correspondent for Geo TV network, has revealed that Zimbabwe is the frontrunner to replace Afghanistan in the tri-series. It is a T20I tri-series and will be a good tournament to fine-tune preparation for Zimbabwe in subcontinental conditions after their qualification in the T20 World Cup 2026.
Afghanistan's future with Pakistan cricket uncertain
Pakistan and Sri Lanka, though, would be missing the chance to play a quality team like Afghanistan. In recent times, Afghanistan have challenged their senior Asian counterparts, and it would have been a good preparation for all three major teams in the region after the Asia Cup 2025.
The withdrawal from Afghanistan, though, can create bigger problems for Pakistan in future. The country is already not on good terms with India, and there has been no bilateral series between the two nations for over a decade now. If their relations continue to deteriorate with Afghanistan, it would mean that the Afghans would also try to boycott Pakistan in the bilateral series.
As far as the tri-series is concerned, it is just a short tournament with all matches at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. The final will be played on November 29, and both Pakistan and Sri Lanka will be hoping to win the tournament and get their preparation on track for the T20 World Cup 2026.
