In a significant development, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has made a bold move by appointing former fast bowler Aqib Javed as the interim head coach of the Pakistan team's white-ball setup. He will take charge until the conclusion of the Champions Trophy 2025. The decision comes at a crucial time as Pakistan gears up for a packed international calendar in the lead-up to the major tournament.

Aqib Javed To Coach Pakistan Until Champions Trophy 2025

Aqib Javed, who enjoyed a successful international career as a fast bowler and has extensive coaching experience, will continue to serve as a senior member of the National Selection Committee during his interim head coach tenure. Post-Champions Trophy, he is expected to be assigned additional responsibilities within the team management structure.

It is important to mention that, his appointment comes after the sudden resignation of Gary Kirsten. While the search for a permanent replacement is underway, the PCB aims to finalise the recruitment process by the end of the Champions Trophy.

The departure of Kirsten left a void in Pakistan’s coaching setup, especially with the tournament approaching. The board is now focused on ensuring that a new coach is in place to guide the team beyond the tournament. Meanwhile, Jason Gillespie, Pakistan's red-ball head coach, will resume his duties for the upcoming two-Test series in South Africa.

Why Did PCB Appoint Aqib Javed As Interim Head Coach?

The appointment of Aqib Javed is seen as a strategic move by the PCB to stabilise the team ahead of the mega tournament. Known for his deep understanding of the game and experience in grooming young talent,  he is expected to bring a fresh approach to the side as they aim to regain their competitive edge in white-ball cricket.

The road to the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 will be a busy one for the Pakistan, as they have several important series lined up. Pakistan will next face Zimbabwe in three ODIs and three T20Is.
