In recent news, New Zealand fast bowler Doug Bracewell has been given a one-month suspension from all forms of cricket after testing positive for cocaine earlier this year. The 34-year-old tested positive for the banned substance following a T20 match in January 2024 between Central Stags and Wellington.
After investigating the matter, the Sports Integrity Commission Te Kahu Raunui administered the suspension. He made it clear that the drug use occurred outside of competition and was no connection to the 34-year-old pacer’s performance in the domestic game.
“It was accepted that he had used the cocaine out of competition and for reasons unrelated to sport performance,” the statement from the Sports Tribunal of New Zealand read.
His ban, initially set for three months, was reduced to one month after he participated in a rehabilitation program addressing substance use.

The incident came to light after Doug Bracewell was randomly tested following a standout performance in the domestic T20 game. In that match, Bracewell delivered an exceptional all-round display, claiming figures of 2 for 21 and smashing a quick-fire 30 off just 11 balls, which earned him the Player of the Match award.
According to the report of cricbuzz, Bracewell’s consumption of the substance occurred before the tournament had commenced. This timing was taken into account by the commission, contributing to the reduced sentence. Additionally, Bracewell’s cooperation and willingness to undergo a treatment program played a significant role in reducing the length of his ban.
Doug Bracewell last represented New Zealand in a Test match against Sri Lanka in Wellington in March 2023. Over the course of his international career, he has been a reliable performer for the Black Caps, and has played for New Zealand in 28 Tests, 21 ODIs, and 20 T20Is.
