In a significant development, the PCB has disproved the recent reports which claimed the removal of Jason Gillespie from his role as Pakistan's head coach. In an official statement released on Sunday (November 17), the PCB confirmed its commitment to Gillespie and stated that he will continue to lead the team as the red-ball coach for their upcoming two-match Test series against South Africa.
“PCB strongly refutes the story. As announced previously, Jason Gillespie will continue to coach the Pakistan side for the two red-ball matches against South Africa,” the statement read.
This response comes after earlier speculation indicated that former Pakistan pacer Aqib Javed was set to replace Gillespie as the head coach across all formats.
Jason Gillespie To Continue As Pakistan's Head Coach
Appointed in April on a two-year contract, Jason Gillespie was brought in specifically to handle the red-ball coaching responsibilities for Pakistan. However, rumours circulated that the PCB had offered him the position of full-time head coach for limited-overs cricket as well, which he reportedly declined.
Gillespie had previously stepped in as the interim coach for Pakistan's ODI and T20I series against Australia after the sudden resignation of former head coach Gary Kirsten.
Looking ahead, Gillespie will continue to focus on the red-ball format, with Pakistan set to face South Africa in a highly anticipated two-match Test series. The first Test is scheduled on December 26 at the SuperSport Park in Centurion, followed by the second match at the Newlands in Cape Town.
Despite the swirling rumours and recent challenges in the limited-overs series against Australia, the PCB has shown its confidence in Gillespie's leadership for the red-ball squad. The upcoming Test series against South Africa will be a crucial test for Gillespie as well as Pakistan, as the team aims to rebuild its reputation in the longer format of the game.
