Rishabh Pant fetched a prolific Rs.27 crore deal with the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) franchise at the IPL 2025 mega auction in Saudi Arabia. The dashing Indian wicketkeeper-batter was involved in an intense bidding war between the LSG and Sunrisers Hyderabad franchises after being released by Delhi Capitals earlier this year.
The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) also bid for Pant but walked away from the race after the cricketer’s value rose to Rs.11.25 crore.
Sanjiv Goenka explains record bid for Rishabh Pant
While speaking on TRS podcast, LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka explained the franchise’s decision of raising Rishabh Pant’s bid to Rs.27 crore at the IPL 2025 mega auction. Goenka stated that once Pant’s bidding crossed the Rs.20 crore mark, they wanted to deny the Delhi Capitals from using the Right-to-Match card.
The LSG owner added that the franchise had already set aside nearly Rs.27 crore, specifically for Rishabh Pant. The Indian businessman claimed that Delhi Capitals owner Parth Jindal would have definitely raised over Rs.26 crore for Pant because he is ‘crazy’ for the Indian wicketkeeper-batter. Goenka said:
“We raised the bid to 27cr for Rishabh Pant because we knew DC owner Parth Jindal is crazy for Pant and if he can bid 26.5cr for Shreyas, he'll definitely raise 26.75cr for Rishabh.”
Incidentally, Rishabh Pant became the most expensive purchase in the history of IPL through his Rs.27 crore signing.
Earlier this year, the 27-year-old made his return to competitive cricket after a near-fatal car crash in December 2022 kept him out of action for over a year. On his return, Pant hauled 446 runs in 13 innings for the Delhi Capitals as captain in the IPL 2024 season. The cricketer maintained an astonishing strike rate of 155.40 and punched out three half-centuries in the process.
Rishabh Pant subsequently travelled across the USA and the West Indies where he became a part of India’s 2024 T20 World Cup winning team under the leadership of Rohit Sharma. As of now, Pant is in Australia as Team India is prepping itself to defend its Border-Gavaskar Trophy title.
