Cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan has been barred from Pakistan politics for five years. As per media reports within Pakistan, the country’s election commission issued the penalty after Khan’s conviction on graft charges.

The former all-rounder was recently sentenced to three years of jail time, after he was arrested from his Lahore residence.

Khan barred from politics days after getting arrested

Imran Khan, who served as the prime minister of Pakistan between 2018 and 2022, was arrested from his Lahore house last weekend. He was subsequently transferred to a prison near Islamabad.

The former cricketer was tried on charges of unlawfully selling state gifts during his reign as prime minister.

He was imposed a ban from entering Pakistan politics by the Election Committee of Pakistan (ECB). As per his country’s laws, a convicted person cannot run for public office for at least five years.

Imran Khan, a Pakistani cricket veteran before entering politics, made his international debut with a Test match in Birmingham in 1971. The all-round maverick turned up for his country in 88 Tests and 175 ODI matches during his illustrious 21-year international journey.

Moreover, Khan’s final international appearance also turned out to be one of Pakistan’s most celebrated cricketing moments, as he led his side to their first-ever World Cup title by defeating England in the 1992 final.
