Nicholas Pooran, fresh from his match-winning effort in the second T20I, clubbed a hasty 20 in the third game against India in Providence. Through the course of his recent cameo, the cricketer soared past West Indies legend Marlon Samuels’ tally in T20I matches, and inched closer to batting barbarian Chris Gayle for a national record.

Pooran becomes second highest T20I run-getter for WI

Nicholas Pooran took field against India in the third game of their five-match series with 1,594 T20I runs to his name. The wicketkeeper-batsman, in a bid to up his team’s scoring rate, perished for a 12-ball 20 to Indian spinner Kuldeep Yadav.

Remarkably, Pooran soared past two-time World Cup-winning West Indies legend Marlon Samuels for a rare record in T20Is. The left-hander extended his T20I run tally to 1,614 runs, and is currently sitting three runs ahead of the former player.

The feat also made Pooran the second highest run-getter from his country in T20I cricket. In an elite list, he is only behind T20 behemoth Chris Gayle, who has 1,899 runs to his name from 79 international appearances.

Gayle registered his runs at nearly 28, and held a career T20I strike-rate of 137.50. Apart from being West Indies’ highest run-getter in T20Is, the batting legend is also the joint-highest century-maker from his country in the format, alongside Evin Lewis with two tons each.

Meanwhile, 27-year-old Pooran has so far played 78 T20I matches for West Indies, and has minted his runs at an average of 26.03. Samuels, on the other hand, held a slightly better average with 29.29.
