Pakistan cricket team took field against Netherlands on October 6 to kick-off their World Cup 2023 campaign in Hyderabad. Earlier on the same day, a second-string Pakistani line-up faced Afghanistan in the second semi-final of the Asian Games in Hangzhou.

Playing two different formats on the same day in two different countries, the ‘Men in Green’ players have scripted a rare record for themselves in international cricket.

Pakistan achieves historic first in international cricket

Earlier this week, a young Pakistani unit flayed Hong Kong by 68 runs in Hangzhou to storm into the semi-finals of the 2022 Asian Games. Facing Afghanistan in the knockout fixture on October 6, the ‘Men in Green’ slumped under pressure and were eventually knocked out from the race for the finals.

On the same day in Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, a Babar Azam-led Pakistan team launched their World Cup 2023 campaign with a match against Netherlands. Being invited to bat first, the ‘Men in Green’ batters overcame their top-order jitters to reach 170-4 by the end of their 30th over.

Regardless, Pakistan’s October 6 cricketing commitments marked a historic first in international cricket. They have now become the first team ever to play two different formats on the same day, doing so with a T20I in Hangzhou and an ODI in India.

Team India, slated to face Afghanistan in their Asian Games final on October 7, narrowly missed out on the record as their opening World Cup 2023 fixture will be played the following day in Chennai against Australia.

Pakistan, meanwhile, will continue their World Cup run with a match against Sri Lanka on October 10.
