Devon Conway whacked his career-best 152* to script a memorable run-chase for New Zealand against England in the opening match of the 2023 World Cup. The left-handed opening batter launched 19 boundaries and three sixes against the defending champions to light up the tournament opener in Ahmedabad, and shared a colossal 273-run partnership with number three Rachin Ravindra.

Remarkably, Conway’s match-winning ton also helped him soar past the likes of Sachin Tendulkar and Stephen Fleming for a rare ODI World Cup record.

Devon Conway becomes first batsman to achieve this feat

Devon Conway slammed his fifth ODI century, and also registered his career-best score in the format with his match-winning 152* against defending champions England in Ahmedabad. In doing so, the cricketer became the first batsman in history to score over 150 in a successful run-chase in a men’s World Cup game.

Sri Lankan Lahiru Thirimanne previously scored 139* against England at the 2015 World Cup, while batting greats Stephen Fleming and Sachin Tendulkar clubbed 134* (2003) and 127* (1996) respectively during their playing days.

Conway also claimed a huge New Zealand World Cup record alongside Rachin Ravindra. The two cricketers shared 273 runs for the second wicket together, thus going past the 168-run stand formed by Chris Harris and Lee Germon at the 1996 World Cup.

Both Conway and Ravindra are now recipients of the highest-ever partnership for New Zealand at a World Cup game for any wicket. Notably, they did so in an innings which also marked Ravindra’s first batting appearance at the top of the order for his side.

New Zealand, fresh off their nine-wicket win against England, will now go up against the Netherlands on October 9. The much-awaited fixture will be hosted by the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.
