Oval Invincibles, one of the most successful teams in The Hundred, might soon have a new name, MI London. According to a report by The Telegraph, the change is expected to take place before the start of the sixth season of the competition. The new name is said to be the preferred choice of the team’s co-owners from India, who also own the popular Mumbai Indians franchise.

Oval Invincibles Likely To Be Renamed MI London Next Year

The Oval Invincibles have been a dominant force in The Hundred, winning two titles in the first four seasons. However, with the Mumbai Indians’ owners now holding a 49% stake in the team, they are looking to bring the “MI” brand to London.

Surrey County Cricket Club, which partnered with them in a deal valued at £123 million, had hoped the new name would include “Surrey” to reflect the county’s heritage. But reports suggest this is unlikely to happen.

The renaming is part of major changes coming to The Hundred next year. A new ownership model will see local venues, like The Oval, working alongside outside investors who have purchased nearly half of each franchise. If the name change goes ahead, The Hundred will have two teams with “London” in their names, MI London, based at The Oval, and London Spirit, based at Lord’s.

Other teams in the competition are also undergoing rebranding. The Manchester Originals are expected to be renamed Manchester Super Giants, while Northern Superchargers are likely to include “Sunrisers” in their name, with Sunrisers Leeds being considered.

Notably, Invincibles are the sixth cricket franchise worldwide under RIL's management. They already own Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League and Women’s Premier League, MI Emirates in the UAE’s ILT20, MI Cape Town in South Africa’s SA20, and MI New York in Major League Cricket in the United States.
