Indian businessman Sanjiv Goenka, owner of the Lucknow Super Giants in IPL, has officially bought majority stakes in the Manchester Originals in The Hundred cricket league. In an official announcement, he has said his main focus is to protect the legacy and culture of Manchester’s rich cricket history.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) had earlier decided to privatise The Hundred to attract global investors and boost the tournament's popularity.
As a result, Goenka stepped in with a whopping £107 million investment for around 70% stake, beating out two other IPL franchise owners to win the deal.
Sanjiv Goenka Makes His Manchester Original Deal Official
After owning a cricket team in IPL (Lucknow Super Giants) and SA20 (Durban Super Giants), Sanjiv Goenka has expanded his footprint in The Hundred. He has bought the majority stake in the Lancashire-backed Manchester Originals.
While the franchise could be renamed as Manchester Super Giants, Goenka has assured fans that the team will still respect and uphold the legacy of Lancashire Cricket, which has a long-standing cricketing heritage in Manchester.

MI, SRH Also Acquire The Hundred Teams
Interestingly, LSG aren’t the only ones to represent IPL in The Hundred. After the ECB listed the franchises for sale, Mumbai Indians owner Mukesh Ambani bought 49% stakes worth £60 million in Oval Invincibles.
Not only that, but Sunrisers Hyderabad owner Kavya Maran also acquired 100% stakes of Northern Superchargers for £100 million.
The rest of the franchises were acquired by global investors, including a consortium of Google, Microsoft, and Adobe.
