Sandeep Lamichhane, the former captain of the Nepal cricket team, was found guilty of rape on Friday by the Kathmandu District Court. Judge Shishir Raj Dhakal handed down the order following the conclusion of Sunday's final hearings. Next week, the senior national team member will be sentenced to jail.

Lamichhne is currently free on bail. However, the Patan High Court ordered the cricketer's release on January 12. In response to Lamichhane's review petition, a joint bench of judges Dhruva Raj Nanda and Ramesh Dahal ordered his release on a bail bond of Rs. 2 million.

On August 21, the Kathmandu District Attorney's Office filed a case against Lamichhane, alleging that he had sexually assaulted a girl who was 17 years old. Section 219 of the Criminal Code of 2074 is the basis of his charges. On September 6, the minor filed a case at the Metropolitan Police Circle in Gaushala against him.

On October 6, he was taken into custody by Nepal Police at Tribhuvan International Airport in the middle of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), where he was representing Trinbago Knight Riders.

Following a detention hearing, the Kathmandu District Court on November 4, 2022, issued an order sending Lamichhane to the central jail in Sundhara. He had filed a challenge against the order with the high court afterward.

The district attorney had demanded compensation from Lamichhane through the charge sheet in exchange for the victim's supposed physical and mental torture. The property and bank account of Lamichhane were frozen following the filing of the charge sheet.
