Afghanistan overcame Bangladesh with a thrilling eight-run win in the Super Eights to qualify for the semifinals of the 2024 T20 World Cup. Winning captain Rashid Khan and new-ball pace operator Naveen-ul-Haq played starring roles with the ball, with both bowlers picking up four wickets each in their impactful spells.

As it turned out, the match was filled with ebbs and flows, altering permutations and combinations as well as constant rain interruptions as fans from three nations (including outsider Australia) held their breaths for a possible finish in the top four.

During the closing stages of the thriller at Kingstown, Afghanistan all-rounder Gulbadin Naib even faked an injury while standing at slips in a bid to keep Bangladesh below the DLS par score just as a fresh spell of rain was beginning to threaten the game yet again at the venue.

While Gulbadin’s actions made little-to-no impact to the eventual outcome, it did spark widespread laughter and amusement from across the cricketing fraternity.

Afghanistan star and ‘Player of the Match’ winner Naveen-ul-Haq trolled his senior teammate Gulbadin Naib a few hours after his team secured a famous semifinal-clinching win over Bangladesh.

Taking to his Instagram account, Naveen shared a footage from 2007’s Bollywood comedy film ‘Welcome’, where a character’s fake injury was compared with Gulbadin’s latest T20 World Cup 2024 time-wasting tactic.

In the caption, the young Afghan speedster wrote:“Sorry Gulbadin Naib but had to post this.”

Gulbadin himself acknowledged the hilarious social media post at his expense by amplifying his fake hamstring injury in the comments section. He wrote: “Hey mate I am feeling not well… hamstring problem.”

Gulbadin Naib and Naveen-ul-Haq along with the rest of their Afghanistan teammates will now go up against South Africa in the first semifinal of the 2024 T20 World Cup. The much-awaited contest will be played on June 26 at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy.
