National T20 Cup 2022, Sep 16th: Central and Southern Punjab emerge victorious


As we are inching towards the knockout stages of the Pakistan National T20 Cup 2022, Central Punjab and Southern Punjab came up against Northern and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa respectively, in two enthralling encounters on Friday, September 16th. Let’s take a look at the recap of what transpired.

Match 27th: Central Punjab vs Northern

Central Punjab outclassed Northern by 6 wickets in Match 27th of the ongoing Pakistan National T20 on Friday afternoon at Multan Cricket Stadium in Multan.

A sheer dominance with the bat by Qasim Akram (58 off 37) and Shoaib Malik (62* off 39) helped Central Punjab to chase the target of 163 with two overs to spare. It was a must win game for Central Punjab to keep themselves in the race of the knockout stages. Akram’s side is now placed third in the points table with ten points and will be hoping for favorable results on the final day of the league stages.

Earlier, after electing to bat first, Northern openers got off to a flying start with Nasir Nawaz leading the pack with a dominating 82 off 57. However, Central Punjab managed to keep Northern from reaching a strong total. Aamer Yamin was the pick of the bowlers for Central Punjab once again, who bowled a terrific 19th over, taking three wickets and giving away just five runs to restrict Northern to 162 for 5 at the end of 20 overs.

Match 28th:  Khyber Pakhtunkhwa vs Southern Punjab

Southern Punjab got the better of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa by 7 wickets in a one sided affair in the second fixture of the day at Multan Cricket Stadium in Multan.

After bowling out Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for just 133, Sohaib Maqsood’s unbeaten 61 off 44 powered Southern Punjab to chase the target in just 15.1 overs. SP did lose two of their openers early in the powerplay but a 68 runs partnership for the third wicket between Maqsood and Aagha Salman got things back in control for SP. The bottom dwellers are now above Northern in the points table and will be hoping KPK can defeat Balochistan in the last league match to keep their Semi Finals hopes alive.

Earlier, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa won the toss and opted to bat first. Their openers got them off to a great start with 31 on the board after the first three overs. Thereafter, Southern Punjab turned up with the ball and limited the men in black to 74 for 6 at one point. Kamran Ghulam played a fighting knock of 54 runs in 40 balls and Pakhtunkhwa could only finish with a paltry 133 for 20 in the first innings.
