Australian spinner Nathan Lyon joined an elite club with another commanding performance against Sri Lanka. Karun Nair continues to rack up big runs in India’s domestic season. In South Africa, MI Cape Town crushed Sunrisers’ hat-trick ambitions by winning the SA20 2025 title.

Capping an eventful day in the world of cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest cricketing news that emerged out of Saturday, February 8.

Nathan Lyon Completes 550 Wickets, AUS In Complete Control

Nathan Lyon picked up three more Sri Lankan wickets in the second innings of the series-deciding Galle Test to scale the 550-wicket landmark in Test cricket. The legendary Australian off-spinner dismissed Dinesh Chandimal, Kamindu Mendis and Angelo Mathews on Day 3 as the hosts reached a troublesome 211-8 from 62.1 overs by stumps.

Lyon became only the seventh player in history, and only the third Australian after Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath to complete 550 wickets in Test cricket, and is currently sitting on an illustrious pile of 552 wickets from 136 matches with an impressive bowling average of 30.24.

T20I Stars Suryakumar, Shivam Dube Fail On Ranji Return

Indian T20I stars Suryakumar Yadav and Shivam Dube both failed to get going on their respective returns to Ranji Trophy for the Mumbai cricket team. Facing Haryana in the third quarterfinal of the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy season in Kolkata, Suryakumar got knocked over by fast bowler Sumit Kumar for just nine, while Dube was dismissed by Ajit Chahal after reaching 28 from 32 balls. Fortunately for Mumbai, Shams Mulani’s fighting 91 elevated them to a competitive 278-8 by stumps on Day 1.

Notably, both Suryakumar and Shivam Dube recently starred in India’s emphatic 4-1 T20I series win over England at home.

Karun Nair Tons Up For Vidarbha In Ranji Trophy Quarterfinals

Karun Nair punched out an unbeaten 100 from 180 balls with 14 boundaries and a six against Tamil Nadu in the second quarterfinal of the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy season at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Ground in Nagpur. Batting at number five for Vidarbha and arriving to the crease at a precarious 44-3, Nair defied Tamil Nadu bowlers throughout the remainder of the day to steer his team to 264-6 by stumps.

The innings sustained Karun Nair’s prolific run-scoring juggernaut this Indian domestic season, considering the cricketer also plundered 779 runs during the recently-concluded Vijay Hazare Trophy for Vidarbha at a surreal average of 389.50.

Phillips Ton, Santner’s Three-Fer Headline Winning Start For NZ

New Zealand started off the Pakistan tri-series with a 78-run win over the hosts at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium. Batting first, the ‘Black Caps’ hauled a colossal 330-6 from 50 overs after winning the toss. Kane Williamson at number three punched out a cautious 58, while Daryl Mitchell minted 81 runs at near run-a-ball. Glenn Phillips at number six turbo-charged the New Zealand innings in the backend by launching six boundaries and seven huge sixes in his 74-ball 106.

In response, Pakistan folded up for just 252 in 47.5 overs, with blistering opener and comeback man Fakhar Zaman himself accounting for 84 runs. For New Zealand, fast bowler Matt Henry picked up three wickets at an expense of 53 runs, while spinner Mitchell Santner claimed the prized scalps of Kamran Ghulam, Mohammad Rizwan and Khushdil Shah.

Boult, Rabada And Linde Crush Sunrisers As MI Cape Town Clinch SA20 2025

MI Cape Town upstaged defending champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the final to clinch the SA20 2025 title in Johannesburg. Ryan Rickelton, Connor Esterhuizen and Dewald Brevis all chipped in swift 30s each to elevate the MI Cape Town to 181-8 from 20 overs.

Later in the Sunrisers run-chase, fast bowlers Trent Boult (2-9) and Kagiso Radaba (4-25), as well as left-arm spinner George Linde (2-20) wrapped up the defending champions for just 105 to secure a huge 76-run win.
