India are set to face England in the 2nd ODI of the three-game series on February 9. The match will be held at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack from 1.30 PM IST.
Team India has a 1-0 lead in the series after they won the 1st ODI in Nagpur by four wickets. Chasing 249 runs, Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel’s fifties helped India secure a win in 38.4 overs.
Now, ahead of the 2nd ODI, India’s team management is facing a major conundrum with the playing XI.
Virat Kohli to return!
India’s batting coach Sitanshu Kotak confirmed in a press conference that Virat Kohli is fit to play the 2nd ODI after missing the series opener with knee swelling. However, the dilemma is to whom to bench.
Shreyas Iyer or Jaiswal? Who will be axed?
Shreyas Iyer dropped a bombshell in his post-game interview that he was supposed to sit on the bench in the first game if Virat hadn’t gotten injured. Moreover, Kotak said on Saturday that Yashasvi Jaiswal’s debut happened solely due to backing from captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Gautam Gambhir.
However, with Virat Kohli coming in, either one of them will have to sit out. While the management prefers Jaiswal as an opener to manage the left-right combination, it is a hard reality that the youngster’s inexperience is a big factor to ignore.
On the other hand, Shreyas Iyer has consistently performed in ODI cricket despite being out for a long haul. Hence, to tinker with his spot at no.4 for the sake of a left-right combination does not seem a sensible choice.
Shubman Gill Can Open
As for the opening role, Shubman Gill can return to his favourable spot where he has been effective. Moreover, Kohli is comfortable at no.3 and his position shouldn’t be changed as the veteran is already struggling to score runs. Overall, dropping Jaiswal seems a win-win situation for Team India.
As for the bowling, Harshit Rana performed well in his debut game and Gambhir is likely to back the youngster for the second game, which means Arshdeep will have to sit out as Mohammad Shami is their priority, especially with Champions Trophy around the corner.
Varun Chakravarthy could come in for Kuldeep Yadav but India is unlikely to take that risk until the series is in hand.
India's probable XI for 2nd ODI
Rohit Sharma (c), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (wk), Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Harshit Rana, Mohammed Shami
