Mumbai, under the leadership of veteran cricketer Ajinkya Rahane, qualified for the semi-final of the Ranji Trophy 2024-25 season as they defeated Haryana by 152 runs in the quarter-final. Shardul Thakur was the hero for Mumbai as he took 9 wickets.
In the first innings, though Mumbai started shaky, they went on to reach 315 with some excellent knocks from Tanush Kotian, who scored 97, and Shams Mulani, who scored 91. Both batted very solidly against Haryana's bowling attack to see the team cross the 300-run mark.
Shardul Thakur emerged as the hero with the ball, claiming six crucial wickets and dismantling Haryana’s batting lineup to 301.
Mumbai moves one step closer to defending Ranji Trophy title
With a 14-run lead, Ajinkya Rahane blasted a century in the third inning, finishing 108 off 180 balls. Suryakumar Yadav finally showed some flair in red-ball cricket, with 70 off 86.
Shivam Dube also contributed with 48 runs as Mumbai set up a massive target of 353 runs for Haryana. Thakur once again starred with a 3-wicket-haul in the fourth inning with Royston Dias claiming a fifer. The duo bowled out Haryana for 201, leading a comprehensive 152-run victory.
The defending champions will meet the winning team of Vidarbha vs Tamil Nadu Quarter Final 2 in the semi-final contest.
Mumbai made a fitting comeback into the Ranji Trophy after initially losing a rare game against Jammu & Kashmir. Big guns like Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal featured in that game, but failed to make a difference.
However, Ajinkya Rahane had led Mumbai back to winning ways as they now gear up for the semi-final, the second-last step in their quest to defend their title.
