While MS Dhoni may be a supporting captain on most days, self-learning is something he swore by, and he even went on to refuse to help Shardul Thakur in IPL to allow him to learn his lesson and figure out a solution on his own.

MS Dhoni has been one India’s most successful captain for a reason. His sharp understanding of the game, active presence of mind, and elite wicket-keeping skills helped his bowlers achieve profound success.

Many bowlers who played under his captaincy in IPL credited MS Dhoni for their success. However, not always does Dhoni enjoy being the main lead. On most days, he would rather let his bowlers understand the importance of self learning.

MS Dhoni taught Shardul Thakur an important life lesson

In one such rare instance revealed by former cricketer Harbhajan Singh, MS Dhoni apparently refused to help Shardul Thakur in IPL when the trio were playing for CSK together.

In a chat with Taruwar Kohli, Bhajji revealed that Kane Williamson hit Shardul for back to back boundaries and the bowler was feeding Kane by bowling on same predictable lengths.

"Shardul Thakur was bowling and the first ball Kane Williamson hit him down the ground for a boundary. Next ball, same length and Williamson played the same shot. I went to MS and asked him to tell Shardul try and bowl different length."

But when Harbhajan asked MS Dhoni to intervene, the CSK captain refused to do so. He said that not always he is going to be around to guide these youngsters. Eventually, they have to learn on their own.

"MS said to me 'Paaji agar aaj bataunga na, yeh kabhi nahi seekhega (If I will tell him now, then he will never learn). Let him learn by himself'.

While self-learning comes at a cost, Dhoni was ready to bear it for the sake of Shardul Thakur’s personal growth as a bowler.

Bhajji Spills MS Dhoni’s Qualities That Led To CSK’s Success

CSK won five titles in MS Dhoni’s leadership and Harbhajan Singh believes that Dhoni’s certain qualities had a big impact on the franchise’s success. Dhoni’s calm approach, clarity of thought and maintaining a positive dressing room environment sets him apart.

"He is very calm, which is a huge deal. Secondly, he is very clear what he wants. And third, his own ability to win games reflects on the team as well. These are three very important things Dhoni does.

Over the years, he has always ensured that every player feels equal in the dressing room and irrespective of the results, the team’s spirits are always high.

Learning over results is a mantra MS Dhoni follows and preaches till date.
