England have restructured their white-ball coaching setup and have announced Brendon McCullum as the new head coach, adding to his role as the leader of the Test team as well.

England team were keen on having a split-coaching system, something which Director Robert Key insisted on, but the experiment lasted two-years as England have revert back to the old coaching ways.

McCullum, whose contract has been extended till 2027, will take charge of the white-ball team from January 2025, with his first major assignment taking place against India in a one-day series.

Following this, McCullum’s biggest challenge would come up in the Champions Trophy in February. England have been a disaster in the last two ICC tournaments and McCullum has a tough task ahead of him.

Meanwhile, assistant coach, Marcus Trescothick will fill in as the interim coach for the upcoming white-ball series against Australia. The England side have done extremely well under his guidance in Tests, and the ECB would hope that the Test coach could replicate the same form in white-ball cricket as well.

"I'm delighted that Brendon has chosen to do both roles now with England," Key said. "I believe we are incredibly fortunate that a coach of his quality is prepared to commit wholeheartedly to English cricket. Being able to align all teams now is particularly exciting and we look forward to taking on all challenges that come our way.

England swift on coaching appointment after Mott stepped down

Mott stepped down in July after England’s disastrous run in the T20 World Cup 2024. Under his guidance, England failed to reach the semis in the World Cup 2023 and lost in the semis against a rampant Indian side.

Needing to change the style of play, the ECB made a swift move by appointing McCullum, who knows the England structure inside out.

Some other names like Kumar Sangakkara was also under consideration, but the Three Lions were always keen on having McCullum take charge of the side.
