Pakistan’s struggles continued on the fourth day of the ongoing first Test against England in Multan, as Babar Azam's missed an easy catch off Joe Root. The star batter has been in sublime form throughout the innings, was given a reprieve on 186 after Pakistan’s former captain dropped an absolute sitter at mid-wicket. Root, seizing the opportunity, went on to score his double century and push England into a commanding position.

Having ended Day 3 at 492/3, England resumed with a clear intent to build a massive lead over Pakistan. Joe Root and Harry Brook, were both settled at the crease and looked untroubled by the Pakistan attack. The flat Multan track offered little assistance to the bowlers, and Pakistan’s weary bowling unit, already stretched to the limit, struggled to create chances.

However, a glimmer of hope arrived in the morning session when Naseem Shah managed to induce an error from Root. The Englishman attempted a pull shot but mistimed it, sending the ball straight to Babar Azam at mid-wicket. The crowd held its breath as the ball flew toward him, only to gasp in disappointment as the experienced cricketer failed to hold onto what should have been a straightforward catch.

For Pakistan, this missed opportunity could not have come at a worse time. Joe Root already anchored the innings with great composure, capitalized on the let-off, continuing his assault on the Pakistan bowlers.

Aware of the pressure on him, Babar’s frustration was visible as he watched Root raise his bat to celebrate his double century shortly afterward.

Root's innings came off 305 balls, filled with classy strokes and remarkable patience, showcasing his status as one of the modern game's greats.

The missed chance not only cost Pakistan dearly on the scoreboard but also seemed to deflate their spirits. With the track offering little in terms of movement or turn, chances were already at a premium. Losing out on one of the few genuine chances to dismiss Root compounded the home side’s difficulties. At the time of writing England is at 656/3, with Joe Root and Harry Brook on the crease.
