Mohammad Shami's prolonged absence from the international scene could continue for the entirety of the five-match Test series against England as the experienced Indian pacer continues to recuperate from his ankle injury.

Shami, who was already ruled out of the first two Tests in Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam, could be sidelined from the following three Tests in Rajkot, Ranchi and Dharamshala also, reported Cricbuzz, as the pacer stays put in London and undergoes medical treatment.

The 33-year-old seamer last turned out for India in the final of the ICC World Cup 2023 in mid November. Having sustained an ankle issue throughout India's campaign, the Bengal seamer has been unable to land on his foot while bowling without feeling great discomfort and pain and requires extensive attention and potentially a surgery to bounce back.

Shami Ruled Out Of England Test Series?

"The situation with Shami is also not promising. The pacer is grappling with an ankle issue during landing," Cricbuzz reported.

"He is currently in London, and while there is no immediate information about surgery, he is believed to be undergoing treatments for the ankle with injections. It is almost certain he will not be available for any match of the ongoing five-Test series."

If he does undergo surgery, Shami will be ruled out of the subsequent IPL 2024 also where he is due to turn out for the Gujarat Titans (GT) franchise. Even without surgery, the pacer doesn't look like a sure starter for the Titans in the current state.

"From which stage will he be able to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL) scheduled for March to May is the question," the report added.

Shami had been retained by the Titans after being integral to their title-winning run in IPL 2022 and their ascent to finish runners-up in IPL 2023. The pacer has taken 48 wickets in 33 matches since joining the Gujarat franchise.
