In a thrilling encounter that had fans on the edge of their seats, Jonny Bairstow delivered a breathtaking performance, nearly pulling off an improbable heist for Welsh Fire against London Spirit in the 6th match of The Hundred.
Chasing a competitive total, Welsh Fire found themselves in dire straits at 55/6 in just 7.5 overs, their innings in tatters. But what followed was a sensational counterattack from Bairstow, who played one of the most electrifying knocks of The Hundred.
The Bairstow Bashing That Almost Sealed The Win!
Bairstow smashed an unbeaten 86 off just 50 balls, including 6 fours and 6 sixes. His heroic effort brought Welsh Fire agonizingly close, but they ultimately fell short by 8 runs, as London Spirit held their nerve in a tense finish.
Jonny Bairstow, who had been unusually quiet in the early stages, exploded into life alongside Chris Green, turning the game on its head. The duo added 82 runs in last 35 balls, with Bairstow unleashing his trademark power-hitting, clearing the ropes with disdain at a strike rate of 172.
The crowd, which had been subdued by Welsh Fire’s early collapse, erupted as Bairstow took the attack to the bowlers, dismantling the London Spirit attack with brutal efficiency.
Bairstow Delays Spirit's Early Win!
Earlier in the evening, David Warner had set the tone for London Spirit with a gritty 58 off 42 balls, battling through a scratchy start to anchor the innings. Cameos from Jamie Smith (24 off 14) and Ashton Turner (20 off 12) helped Spirit post a competitive 154/7. Welsh Fire’s pace trio of Riley Meredith, David Payne, and David Hull impressed, but their second-string bowlers leaked runs, allowing Spirit to accelerate in the death overs.
In response, Welsh Fire’s top order crumbled against disciplined bowling from Nathan Ellis (3/20) and Daniel Worrall (2/23), leaving them staring at a heavy defeat. But Bairstow’s late assault, combined with Green’s fearless hitting, turned what seemed like a foregone conclusion into a nail-biter. Needing 19 off the last five balls, Bairstow smashed two sixes, but Luke Wood held his nerve in the final set to seal the win for Spirit.
