Daunting task for MI ahead [Source: @iplt20.com]
The Mumbai Indians (MI) have made it to the playoffs of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, however, their task has gotten harder since the team lost against Punjab Kings on Monday in their last league match and will finish in the 4th position in the points table.
With PBKS securing the top spot in the points table, MI will either face GT or RCB in the Eliminator and the result of the RCB Vs LSG match on Tuesday will determine MI's opponent.
However, despite qualifying for the playoffs, MI's chances of winning their 6th IPL title has reduced and the reason is that in the history of the IPL, only one team has gone onto win the league title after finishing at the Eliminator, and nobody else has done it.
Which team won the IPL title after finishing In Eliminator?
The only team to have won an IPL title after finishing in the Eliminator spot was David Warner's Sunrisers Hyderabad during the 2016 edition. The team finished 3rd in the table, thus they played the Eliminator against Kolkata knight Riders and defeated them to reach the Qualifier 2 stage.
In Qualifier 1, RCB defeated Gujarat Lions in a nail-biter and thus, the Qualifier 2 took place between SRH and GL. In the game, the Sunrisers kept their calm and crossed the hurdle to set a date with RCB.
The Virat Kohli led side were the favourites, and were getting closer to their maiden IPL title before the SRH bowlers choked the RCB batters and won the finale to do the unthinkable and win the title despite facing a daunting task.
