Indian batter Suryakumar Yadav has been an absolute powerhouse in T20I cricket. However, his journey in One-Day Internationals (ODI) has been less than spectacular.

Suryakumar Yadav is determined to shine in Asia Cup 2023

Surya has had a challenging ride in the 50-over format, with only 511 runs from 26 matches at a dismal average of 24.3. Nevertheless, selectors showed faith in his skills and named him in India's squad for the Asia Cup 2023. Now, the dynamic batter seems determined to prove his mettle in this format.

In a conversation with Star Sports, Surya expressed his commitment to any role the team allots him. He shed light on the commonalities and challenges between the T20I and ODI formats, stating that while he has been commendable in T20Is, ODIs have been a tough nut to crack for him.

“I would try to fulfill the role I am given by the team, no matter what role. This is a format I am looking forward to doing well in. I am doing great in T20Is. But these both are white-ball formats. Why I cannot crack the code here, people are wondering,” said Surya.

The swashbuckling batter highlighted his preparation for the ODIs and explained the multifaceted approach required for the format.

He pointed out the need to build an innings, focus on strike rotation, and eventually unleash the aggressiveness like in T20s.

Surya further revealed that he has been seeking guidance from the trio of Indian stalwarts – head coach Rahul Dravid and veterans Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.

“I am practising. For me, this format is the most challenging one..you have to play a mix of all formats in this one. First you take your time, then you do some strike rotation then go for some big shots like in T20Is. I have been talking to head coach Rahul Dravid, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli,” added the Mumbai-based cricketer.

On a more personal note, the 32-year-old was hopeful of cracking the code in ODI cricket in Asia Cup. Surya also addressed the curiosity regarding his signature quick sprint to the crease, revealing that it's a manifestation of his passion and excitement for the game, regardless of the match's outcome.

“But I am now trying to play as per the situation and practicing accordingly. Hopefully, this is the tournament where I crack the code. I am always excited to bat. It does not matter if I am out on the first ball. People ask me why I sprint to the crease when my chance to bat comes, but I feel that maintaining this excitement is important,” concluded Surya.

As the cricketing community awaits India’s World Cup 2023 squad announcement, all eyes will be on Surya, hoping he "cracks the code" and brings his T20I flair to the ODI arena.
