'Mastered Cover Drive' - Babar Azam Indirectly Challenges Virat Kohli

Former Pakistan captain discussed his mastery of his favorite cricketing shot, the cover drive, while also addressing how he navigated through challenging phases in his career.

Currently playing for Rangpur Riders in the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) 2024, Babar shared insights into the role of the cover drive in alleviating nervousness and building confidence. 

Comparisons are often drawn between Babar's cover drive and Virat Kohli's signature shot, acknowledging both players as contemporary experts in executing this stroke with elegance.

Recognized as two of the finest batters of their generation, Kohli and Babar are frequently admired for their graceful playing styles. Kohli's mastery and command over the cover drive have been praised by fans and experts, while Babar's version is characterized by impeccable timing and grace. 

Despite their stylistic differences, both players are esteemed for their remarkable proficiency in playing the cover drive. The comparison between Virat Kohli and Babar Azam, both celebrated for their mastery of this iconic shot.

Reflecting on his own career, Babar discussed how the cover drive became a strength for him and contributed to boosting his confidence. 

"As a batter, whenever you are playing a shot, your nervousness decreases. Whenever you play a shot or score a boundary, you tend to get normal, and my cover drive is my strength and my confidence gets a boost after hitting that shot. From the early days I worked hard on my cover drive and now I feel that I have mastered it (cover drive) to some extent," Babar Azam told Cricbuzz.

Babar also discussed how he copes with challenging phases and emphasized the importance of seeking guidance from various sources. However, he underscored that the most significant learning comes from self-reflection.

"Yes, indeed, I consult with several people. I analyze my performance by reviewing my videos in the nets and engaging in discussions. Nevertheless, I believe you are your most significant coach. While others can provide insights into technique, you must internally grasp where you are faltering and how to rectify it. As a batter, you are best aware of the mistakes you are committing,"  added Babar.

Babar's batting display did not meet the expectations commensurate with his stature, managing only 320 runs in 9 matches during the significant tournament. His struggles with the bat persisted in the Test series against Australia, culminating in the year 2023 without a single Test fifty. 

Nevertheless, Babar made a remarkable return to form in the T20I series against New Zealand, securing three consecutive fifties. Additionally, his consistent performance in the ongoing BPL indicates a positive trend for the future.
