In a big change ahead of the resumption of IPL 2025, BCCI has decided to allow franchises Temporary replacements to tackle the situation of non-availability of players due to the re-schedule of the league. However, any player selected using temporary replacement rules will not be allowed to be retained for the next year. Thus, the player would have to register for the auction of the next season.
BCCI Changes Replacement Rule To Tackle Non-Availability Of Foreign Players In IPL 2025
The revelation about the rule has been made through a report by EspnCricinfo. Notably, Delhi Capitals have become the first team to use the rule and have replaced Jake Fraser-McGurk with Mustafizur Rahman.
"Given the non-availability of certain foreign players due to national commitments or personal reasons or any injury or illness, Temporary Replacement Players will be allowed until the conclusion of this tournament."
"This decision is subject to the condition that the Temporary Replacement players taken from this point forward will not be eligible for retention in the following year. Temporary Replacement players will have to register for the IPL Player Auction 2026."
Earlier, IPL regulations stated that a franchise can sign replacements in the event of illness or injury provided it occurs during or before their 12th match of the season. However, the BCCI has now changed the rules, given the uncertainity over availability of foreign players for the remainder of IPL 2025.
The IPL 2025 was suspended for a week on May 9 due to tensions between India and Pakistan. The ceasefire now has cooled things off a bit, and the Indian league is set to resume on May 17. The final will be played on June 3 and thus, there are chances that some players might not come back for the remainder of the season due to national commitments.
