In a crucial meeting held in Ahmedabad on Tuesday, top officials from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) - including secretary Jay Shah, chief selector Ajit Agarkar, and head coach Rahul Dravid - gathered to finalize the Indian squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024.

The meeting, filled with intense discussions and tough decisions, resulted in a 15-member squad led by Rohit Sharma. However, the real stunner came with the announcement of Hardik Pandya as vice-captain, a decision that has left fans and pundits alike scratching their heads.

Hardik’s recent form has been anything but promising, following a troubling ankle injury and a controversial shift to lead Mumbai Indians — a team currently languishing near the bottom of the IPL table after a string of dismal performances.

A BCCI source, speaking on condition of anonymity, shared that Hardik’s inclusion in the squad was hotly debated.

"There was a lot of debate over Hardik's place in the squad while (Sanju) Samson was not debated much," the source revealed.

Despite his recent form, the selectors have decided to back Hardik Pandya, betting on his past experience as a captain and his potential to turn around his form.

The selectors opted instead for the in-form Rajasthan Royals' captain Sanju Samson, a decision that went without dispute.

Furthermore, the selectors faced a tough call between Shivam Dube and Rinku Singh for a spot in the squad, with both players showing potential in the IPL.

Ultimately, they opted for Dube, with the source noting, "It was a toss-up between Dube and Rinku with Hardik also in the squad."

Rinku Singh unlucky: Sources

Rinku Singh, despite his potential, was relegated to the reserves, a move described by the source as the southpaw being just ‘unlucky’. Besides Rinku, the four travelling reserves include batsman Shubman Gill and fast bowlers Avesh Khan and Khaleel Ahmed.

Meanwhile, as the selectors put their bets on the table, the Indian squad for T20 World Cup is set to embark on a campaign that kicks off on June 5 in New York against Ireland, followed by a blockbuster face-off with Pakistan on June 9.

The decisions made in the fateful selection meeting will be under intense scrutiny as the team battles it out on the world stage, with every run and wicket either justifying or questioning the controversial selections.
