In a significant development, former India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik has joined London Spirit as their new mentor and batting coach. The Lord's-based franchise announced his arrival on Wednesday, December 10. Karthik, who retired from professional cricket earlier this year, will work alongside head coach Andy Flower from the 2026 season as the Spirit look to reset their men's setup.
Dinesh Karthik reunites with RCB’s Mo Bobat and Andy Flower in London Spirit’s new leadership core
London Spirit entered The Hundred with strong expectations but have struggled to find consistency across the tournament’s five editions. In this period, they have progressed to the knockouts only once, failing to qualify in four seasons.
Their recent trajectory has been particularly challenging, with the team missing out on the knockout stages for the last three consecutive editions. The 2025 season was especially disappointing as the Spirit finished seventh on the table, forcing some big steps on rebuilding the leadership structure.
The addition of Dinesh Karthik is hardly surprising given the franchise’s ongoing backroom overhaul. Earlier this year, Mo Bobat, also linked with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), took over as director of cricket.
More recently, RCB head coach Andy Flower joined the setup in October, replacing Justin Langer, further signalling a clear strategic shift.
“Excited to take on a new challenge,” Karthik wrote in his Instagram post.
Bobat and Flower worked closely with Karthik during the 2025 IPL season, a landmark year in which RCB clinched their maiden IPL championship, with Karthik playing an important leadership role, again as a mentor and batting coach.
This group had a huge success and was central to RCB’s 2025 IPL triumph, ending an 18-year wait through smarter planning, clearer roles and a revamped T20 approach.
London Spirit now hopes this proven collaboration can spark a similar revival like it did for RCB. Joining forces with head coach Justin Langer, Karthik and Bobat will look to stabilise the squad, strengthen decision-making, and upgrade the batting group as the franchise aims to turn around disappointing recent seasons in The Hundred.
