Liam Dawson made a dream return to international cricket after almost three years, delivering a match-winning performance in the first T20I against the West Indies at Chester-le-Street on Friday. The 35-year-old England spinner was in brilliant form, picking up four crucial wickets for just 20 runs in his four-over spell.

His exceptional bowling helped England defeat the West Indies by 21 runs, as they restricted the visitors to 167/9 while defending a total of 188/6.

England’s innings was powered by Jos Buttler, who played a captain’s knock and fell just short of a century with 96 runs.

However, it was Dawson’s performance with the ball that truly stole the spotlight. He changed the course of the game with his four-wicket haul, and with this, Dawson became the fifth bowler overall from England to register the best bowling figures in a T20I against the WI.

It’s also worth noting that Dawson also became the seventh English bowler to claim a four-wicket haul against the West Indies in T20Is, and only the second spinner to do so after Adil Rashid.

Dawson was trusted with the new ball and he delivered early by dismissing Johnson Charles, who was stumped by Jos Buttler after failing to pick a slower delivery. That early breakthrough set the tone for England’s bowling attack.

Later, when the WI were beginning to build momentum, Dawson returned during the middle overs and turned the match on its head. He picked up three more wickets, Roston Chase, Sherfane Rutherford, and Rovman Powell, causing a major collapse in the Windies lineup, who crumbled from 91/2 in the 10th over to 115/6.

The five-match T20I series will now move to Bristol on Sunday, followed by the final match in Southampton on Tuesday.
