India announced a 15-man squad for the upcoming ODI series against New Zealand. However, Ruturaj Gaikwad, who scored a century in his last outing for India, was dropped, and fans raged on social media.

The three-game ODI series is due to begin on January 11, and hence, the BCCI released the squad on January 3.

Captain Shubman Gill will return after a toe injury, while Shreyas Iyer’s participation is subject to fitness.

Fans demand justice for Ruturaj Gaikwad

Shreyas Iyer sustained a rib injury in Australia and went into a long rehabilitation program. To fill in his void, Ruturaj Gaikwad was given an opportunity in the ODI series against South Africa.

And Gaikwad utilised the chance to slam a hundred (105) in the second ODI at Raipur. However, now that Iyer is almost fit to play, Ruturaj had to swallow the hard pill.

BCCI dropped him from the 15-man squad for the New Zealand series, leaving fans in disbelief.

His supporters criticised BCCI and the selection committee led by Ajit Agarkar for being biased and doing injustice to Ruturaj Gaikwad. Many found the decision hard to believe since the CSK captain had been in good form.

In the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26, Ruturaj Gaikwad, while playing for Maharashtra, has scored 257 runs in five games at a 120.65 strike rate, including a hundred and fifty.

Hence, despite piling up significant numbers and proving his mettle, Gaikwad had to face the snub.

Apart from Ruturaj Gaikwad, Mohammed Shami has also failed to find a place despite stunning spells in SMAT and VHT. Mohammed Siraj, rested since the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, is back in the ODI setup.

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, after performing brilliantly in the VHT, also retained their places.
