As the T20 World Cup 2024 approaches, excitement is building among fans and the cricket community. The tournament will be co-hosted by the USA and the West Indies next month. Despite the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL), attention is turning to the international spectacle.

India's 15-member squad for the T20 World Cup was announced on April 30, 2024. Rohit Sharma has been appointed as the captain, while Hardik Pandya has been named vice-captain.

The squad selection has sparked discussions about the team’s strategy and composition for the tournament.

Ponting Supports Virat Kohli's Selection In The WC Squad

Ahead of the marquee tournament, Ricky Ponting, the former Australian captain, has suggested that Virat Kohli should be given the responsibility to open the batting alongside Rohit Sharma in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup.

“They (selectors) have still got a decision to make because (Yashasvi) Jaiswal is in that squad and one thing they haven’t got a lot in their team is left-hand batters. So they’ve got a decision to make with Jaiswal, but I’m pretty sure that they’ll go with Kohli and Rohit Sharma (as openers),” Ponting added.

He has backed Kohli to excel in the tournament, and also highlighted his track record of performing well in high-stakes matches.

The former legendary player also noted that despite people scrutinizing Kohli's place in the team, he stated that the dynamic Indian batter is indispensable and should be the first player selected in India's XI.

India will start its T20 World Cup tournament facing Ireland on June 5, 2024.
