KL Rahul's gritty and defiant century in the first innings of the Centurion Test against South Africa etched him in an esteemed list of Indian batters to have struck two or more hundreds in the rainbow nation.

India's valiant comeback man became only the third player from the country to raise his bat for a three-figure mark twice in Test cricket played in South Africa as he continued his love affair with the SuperSports Park in Centurion.

Rahul, who had struck a majestic 123 at the same venue in India's historic triumph on the previous trip as an opener, replicated his century feat with another memorable hundred at No. 6 this time, scoring 101 off 137 deliveries amidst the sternest of adversity.

As he reached the century mark, the Karnataka lad joined legends Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli, who are the only other two Indians to have made two or more hundreds in Tests in South Africa.

The only two batters from the nation to have truly nailed it in those conditions against the Proteas, Tendulkar boasts of five centuries from 15 Tests played in the rainbow nation, while Kohli has stuck two memorable hundreds in the country from 8 Tests.

Rahul thus became the joint second-highest Indian century-maker in Tests in South Africa, along with Kohli. With his second Centurion ton, the comeback wicketkeeper-batter edged past some of the big names of Indian cricket.

Rahul Dravid, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virender Sehwag, Mohammad Azharuddin, Rishabh Pant, Kapil Dev, Wasim Jaffer, and Pravin Amre all have a century apiece in South Africa, historically the hardest place for Indian batters.

Notably, Rahul now averages above 45 in South Africa in Tests, which makes him only the second batter after Kohli in the current team to be averaging above 40 in the rainbow nation. He is also only the second Indian wicketkeeper-batter after Pant to have made a century in the country.
