Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) CEO Venky Mysore has come up with a suggestion that has the potential to allow all IPL franchises to retain their core players at the auction. As per prominent commentator Harsha Bhogle, the KKR official is of the opinion that franchises should receive eight Right-to-Match cards instead of retention rights.

Teams are set to go undergo a massive revamp at the IPL 2025 mega auction, considering the franchises will be allowed to retain only a handful of players going into the bidding event.

Venky Mysore offers suggestion for IPL 2025 auction

Indian cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle has revealed that KKR CEO Venky Mysore wants the IPL governing body to allow franchises up to eight right-to-match cards instead of the usual player retentions.

For the uninitiated, the right-to-match card would allow a team to acquire an unretained cricketer by simply matching the highest bid made by another franchise at the auction.

Taking to his YouTube channel, Harsha Bhogle said:

“Venky Mysore of KKR has come up with a workable suggestion which is that you should be allowed to retain players if they have a fair market value. So no retentions but eight Right to Match cards.”

The RTM was previously applied during the mega auction of IPL 2014 and IPL 2018 seasons, but was excluded from IPL 2022 because of the addition of two new franchises in the tournament, namely Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants.

Meanwhile, Venky Mysore’s KKR franchise won the recently-concluded IPL 2024 season by defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in a lop-sided final on May 26. The outcome marked KKR’s third title victory, and their first in nearly a decade.

In doing so, KKR also became the third franchise in IPL history to win at least three titles after CSK and Mumbai Indians.
