If reports are to be believed, KKR's mentor Gautam Gambhir is all set to succeed Rahul Dravid to become India's next coach for the 2024-2025 cycle.

While there has been no official confirmation all indications by BCCI's secretary Jay Shah indicate that he could potentially take the baton. Shah during an interview said that they would look to bring someone who understands India's domestic cricket circuit and could further strengthen India's chances.

Moreover as per Cricbuzz, Gambhir's appointment as India's head coach is, "done deal and the announcement will come soon". The same report also stated that negotiations are currently underway "between the two parties and, perhaps, with some others too".

Elaborating on these 'negotiations/challenges' the report stated that while Gambhir is a successful mentor/coach in the IPL, he might not be able to immerse in the other role.

With the head coach's job being an intense and hectic one,  it would require him to travel and move around throughout the year almost, and that might be a factor that Gambhir will consider especially considering his 'young family'. And unlike the five breaks he took during his two-month stint with the Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2024, it won't be possible for him to repeat this during his possible stint with Team India.

The report also mentioned that Gambhir, who is heavy on patriotism and has a 'desh ke liye karna hai' mentality is "weighing all his options."

It is expected that BCCI will make the announcement during the T20 World Cup. If this report holds any truth, the new era of Indian team will feature the legendary T20 WC Winner and ODI WC winner, lead India from the dugout.
