Virat Kohli will reportedly be making his return to the Vijay Hazare Trophy later this year after a gap of 15 seasons. In other news, Bihar opener Vaibhav Suryavanshi slapped a record century against Maharashtra in SMAT 2025 season.

Capping an eventful day in the world of cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest cricketing news that emerged out of Tuesday, December 2.

Usman Khawaja ruled out as Australia name Ashes squad for second Test

Australian opener Usman Khawaja has been ruled out of the upcoming second Test of the 2025-26 Ashes series against England owing to the back injury he suffered in the series-opener in Perth. Cricket Australia has announced a 13-player squad for the second Test, with Josh Inglis and Beau Webster, both finding themselves in the mix of making a possible return to the playing XI. Steve Smith will continue to lead Australia, with the likes of Marnus Labuschagne, Travis Head, Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon accompanying him in a star-studded group.

Will Jacks replaces Mark Wood for England in second Test

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) have also named England’s playing XI for the second Test of the 2025-26 Ashes. After suffering a crushing eight-wicket defeat in Perth, the England team has named just one change in their XI, resting fast bowler Mark Wood citing his workload management. Wood will be replaced by spin-bowling all-rounder Will Jacks.

Captain Ben Stokes, Harry Brook, senior man Joe Root, fast bowler Jofra Archer and others are all expected to reprise their roles for England in Brisbane from November 4 onwards.

Virat Kohli to make his Vijay Hazare Trophy return: Report

Legendary Indian batter Virat Kohli will reportedly be making his return to India’s domestic circuit for the upcoming 2025-26 season of Vijay Hazare Trophy. The Delhi cricketer last played a Vijay Hazare game 15 years ago. As quoted by the Hindustan Times, DDCA President Rohan Jaitley confirmed the rumours by saying that Virat Kohli has already confirmed his availability for the tournament, and he will likely be playing three matches for them.

The Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26 season will commence from December 24 onwards later this month.

Glenn Maxwell pulls out of IPL 2026 auction

Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has decided not to put his name up for the upcoming IPL 2026 auction later this month. The legendary cricketer confirmed the same through a heartfelt social media post. Aged 37, the explosive Australian middle-order batter represented Punjab Kings earlier this year during IPL 2025 in his third separate stint for the franchise, playing seven matches in the competition and scoring just 48 runs at a dismal batting average of eight.

Glenn Maxwell also failed to go big for the RCB franchise in IPL 2024 last year, where he accrued just 52 runs in nine innings at an average of 5.77.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi smashes youngest century in SMAT history

Teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi became the youngest cricketer in the history of Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) to score a century, doing so against Maharashtra in the 2025 edition of the tournament in Eden Gardens. The explosive Bihar opener plundered 108* runs off just 61 balls with seven fours and seven huge sixes as his team charted 176-3 in 20 overs.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi scored his century at the age of just 14 years and 250 days, thus breaking the previous record of 18 years and 118 days set by Vijay Zol in SMAT history.
