India squad announced for West Indies series [Source: AFP]
On Thursday, September 25, the BCCI announced India’s 15-man squad for the upcoming two-Test series against the West Indies. The big news is that star wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant will miss the series as he recovers from a toe fracture sustained during the England tour.
In his absence, the team has two wicketkeeper-batters: Dhruv Jurel, who has been named the first-choice wicketkeeper, and Tamil Nadu’s N. Jagadeesan as his deputy.
Devdutt Padikkal Returns To India Squad
Another change sees Karnataka young star Devdutt Padikkal returning to the squad in place of Karun Nair. Padikkal was part of India’s squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 and played in the Perth Test, making his comeback a boost for the batting line-up.
As expected, Shubman Gill will lead the senior men’s team, while Ravindra Jadeja has been appointed vice-captain, providing experience and stability in the leadership group. India’s pace spearhead and world No. 1 bowler Jasprit Bumrah is included in the squad.
Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer will not be part of the squad. The BCCI has granted him a six-month break from red-ball cricket due to recurring back spasms. This means India will rely on other middle-order options for the series.
The two-Test series will begin at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad from October 2-6, with the second Test scheduled at Arun Jaitely Stadium, New Delhi from October 10-14.
