Tension Escalates As Shubman Gill And Shaheen Afridi Have Heated On-Field Exchange

There is no love lost between Pakistan’s Shaheen Afridi and India’s Shubman Gill, and their history dates back to their Under-19 days when Gill tormented the Pakistan pacer with his batting. In a heated Asia Cup 2025 match between India, and Pakistan, Gill reminded the fast bowler of his calibre as the two exchanged a few words.

War of words between Shaheen and Gill

In the third over of the Indian innings, Shaheen had the task of containing the two openers, Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill, but the Pakistan bowler was made to look ordinary as Gill, who already has a rivalry with him, took him down for two fours in the over.

In the last ball of the third over, Gill unleashed a ferocious shot as he stepped down the track and heaved one through the cover region. It seemed this disrupted Shaheen’s rhythm, and he had a war of words with Gill, who responded back and didn’t shy away from a confrontation with Shaheen as the fast bowler was rattled with the assault.

The 7 year long rivalry between Gill, Shaheen

The Cold War dates back to the Under-19 World Cup in 2018 when Gill scored a brilliant fifty against Bangladesh, and in the next match between India and Pakistan, Shaheen Afridi provoked Gill by stating that “yeh Bangladesh ke bowlers nahi hai,” (stating that it won’t be easy to hit him and his team).

Gill responded by saying: “hum bhi Pakistan ke batsmen nahi hai.” In the game, Gill smacked a brilliant century and reminded Shaheen and the Pakistan side about his immense talent. Since then, the duo have collided several times with the Indian star winning most of the battles against his rival.
