Cameron Green confirms bowling return [Source: AFP Photos]
Cameron Green is finally starting to see light at the end of the tunnel. After months of rehab following back surgery, the Australian allrounder has confirmed that his bowling comeback will happen in Sheffield Shield cricket, not in the limited-overs series against India.
Cameron Green Eyes Bowling Return In Sheffield Shield
As for his spot at No. 3 in the Ashes, Cameron Green says it’s still very much a “wait and see” situation. The 26-year-old has been Australia’s No. 3 in the last four Tests, including the WTC final and the tour of the Caribbean.
He played purely as a batter, churning out gritty knocks of 52, 46 and 42 after a rough start. The scores didn’t set the world on fire but in low-scoring conditions, his contributions were gold dust.
Now, with the Ashes looming in November, Green is slowly winding up the bowling loads again. Speaking ahead of the second ODI against South Africa in Mackay, he revealed:
“I’m not quite certain on what match [I’ll return to bowling], but I’m feeling really good, in a really good spot. It’s exciting being back bowling at a reasonable intensity. It’s been a long road back,” said Green as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
Shield Cricket Over White-Ball Grind
Australia have ODIs and T20Is lined up against India in October but Green doesn’t see those as the place to push his body. Instead, his eyes are on red-ball cricket with Western Australia. He is likely to bowl in the Sheffield Shield fixtures against New South Wales, Tasmania and South Australia before the Ashes kicks off.
“In the past, it’s worked really well when I focused on Shield cricket. So I think that potentially might be the way to go down, especially with working my way back with bowling. Potentially get a few more overs over a few more days might be the best way to go about it.”
That plan already worked for him in 2024. He skipped a T20I series in New Zealand, played Shield cricket instead, scored a ton for WA and then walked into Wellington to smash his highest Test score of 174 not out.
Unsure About Batting Spot
While his bowling return looks set, the No. 3 question still hangs in the air. With Usman Khawaja locked in as opener, Steve Smith and Travis Head solid in the middle, the jigsaw isn’t complete. Sam Konstas is under the scanner after a lean tour of the Caribbean while Jake Weatherald is waiting in the wings.
Green admitted he isn’t sure if he will continue at one-drop.
“You never know. I think there’s certainly a lot of guys that can fill that role. I’m really proud that I was able to do a role up there. But, yeah, wait and see.”
If Green shifts down, the balance of Australia’s top six could change dramatically.
Eyes On The Big Summer
For now, the focus is on easing back into bowling and letting the bat do its job. With the Ashes starting November 21 in Perth, Australia wants Green firing on both fronts because he is one of the few cricketers in world cricket who can genuinely alter the balance of a Test XI.
